TYPICAL ITINERARY
Begin your 5-night Greece & Sicily Cruise on Star Clipper from Athens. Unpack once, relax and enjoy your holiday as you cruise to:
Monemvasia, Greece
Like Gibraltar, Monemvasia is a massive rock island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. It is linked to Gefyra, a village on the mainland by a short causeway and this is where most cruise ships arrive. Cross the causeway and pass through a tunnel in the rock and you will find the hidden medieval town clinging to a rocky cliff - evidence of rule by Byzantine, French, Venetian and Turkish invaders is everywhere. Explore the cobbled streets and winding stairways to find the 13th century Cathedral of Christ in Chains in the central square, the Church of Agios Pavos (956) and the 16th century Church of Panagia Hrysaphitissa. Take the path to the fortress and upper town where the fortress ruins and the Church of Agia Sophia perches on the edge of a sheer cliff.
Pilos, Greece
Pylos is a seaport on the south shore of the magnificent natural harbour of Navarino which is 4 miles long. a gateway to ancient Olympia, the chief sanctuary of Zeus, where the original Olympic Games between Greek city states began in 776 BC. It is the only natural harbour on the west Peloponnese coast of Greece and is sometimes used as a gateway inland to ancient Olympia, the chief sanctuary of Zeus, where the original Olympic Games between Greek city states began in 776 BC.
Syracuse, Sicily
Ancient Syracuse was founded by peaceful Corinthian colonists in 733BC. But its warlike reputation began when the tyrant Gelon assumed power in 485BC and culminated in the rule of Dionysius the Elder. Until 215BC, nothing could stop Syracuse from defeating virtually every army in the Mediterranean, including a prodigious fleet of 134 Athenian triremes. In Ortygia, the island that was the original city, see the remains of the glorious Temple of Athena, which now makes up the walls of the Norman era Duomo. And listen for the echoing whispers of ancient prisoners in the cave dungeon of Orecchio di Dionigi.
Valletta, Malta
Strategically situated midway between Sicily and North Africa, Malta is in every sense a Mediterranean crossroads - a tiny island with an epic and heroic history in which invasion and siege have seen the influences of Romans, Phoenicians, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Crusaders and Britain - all leave an enduring mark upon its cultural heritage. Since 1974, Malta has been a small independent nation and Commonwealth member. The medieval capital of Valletta was established under the order of the Grand Master of Knights of St. John, named Jean de la Valette. Many of the medieval structures of the town remain, including the Palace of the Grand Masters, with its state apartments. Another of the 7 palaces built by the Knights houses the National Museum of Archaeology, displaying prehistoric items discovered on the island. Also of interest is St. John’s Co-Cathedral, with separate chapels dedicated to different orders of the Knights. The National Museum of Fine Arts is housed in a 19th century palace, displaying furniture, paintings and other items from medieval times. The city with its Grand Harbour is a treasure-chest of baroque architecture, its narrow streets a honeycomb of colourful shops and stalls.
