TYPICAL ITINERARY
Set sail from Kiel on your 8-night Kiel to Stockholm cruise on Star Flyer. relax and enjoy your holiday as you cruise to:
Sassnitz (Rügen), Germany
The island of Rügen dips its wide paw into the sea as if testing the Baltic waters. Little Sassnitz is the site of several gingerbread-trimmed hotels where outdoor lovers like to vacation, and it is also the jumping off place for Jasmund National Park, where hikers may walk through forests of beech and larch to view the spectacular chalk cliffs that tower in white majesty over the breaking sea below.
Gdansk (Danzig), Poland
Grandly overlooking the riverfront in Gdansk is the magnificent medieval crane that once unloaded cargoes when this was a Hanseatic League port. It’s an appropriate visual for the city where Solidarity, the movement that freed Poland from communist rule, was born in its shipyards. The heart of Gdansk is an historic visual treat, replete with Renaissance and Baroque churches, gabled houses and tree-shaded streets. Its serene beauty veils a turbulent history of harsh rule by Teutonic Knights, Polish kings, Nazi and Soviet invaders and independence as a free state.
Ventspils, Latvia
Ventspils enjoys the rare distinction of being the Baltic’s only ice-free port. And so ships have been built in here since the 1300’s, when it was part of the Duchy of Courland. Under Duke Jacob, trading ships went as far as Gambia and Tobago. During Soviet rule, it was the Baltic outlet of Russia’s oil pipeline. Today Ventspils’ huge marine terminal handles the world’s largest tankers, but the town heritage is better captured at the lovely Livonian castle on the Venta River. And if you’d like to dip in the Baltic, Ventspils’s beach is first rate!
Visby (Gotland), Sweden
In Visby, the beloved city of walls and roses, it is an odd fact the festive Medieval Week (Medeltidsvecken) actually commemorates the siege and defeat of the city (and slaughter of many of its defenders) by the invading King Valdemar of Denmark in July, 1361. Today’s event has no blood and gore but instead is a celebration of great colour and pageantry. Visitors can explore Visby’s city walls that enfold the back of the old Hanseatic merchant town in a protective circle of limestone battlements. Or look up at towering specimen trees and inhale the delicate scents (including the roses) of exotic flowers at the lush Botanic Gardens.
Stockholm, Sweden
Gamla Stan, the oldest part of Stockholm, is where Lake Malaren is separated by the Slussen from the saltsjon or sea. It is only one of 14 islands that make up this amazingly lovely fresh/salt water-girt city. Some would argue that Stockholm is the most beautiful on earth – and the most accessible by foot or water - for no matter where you look, something tempts your eye, whether it’s the red-brick medieval houses, grand public buildings and palaces, the luxuriant waterside parks, the cobbled streets leading to tempting shops and restaurants, or the silver-dipped waters dotted with sails. Be sure to see the Wasa, King Gustav II Adolf’s gilt-trimmed flagship, on display after 300 years under the sea.
