TYPICAL ITINERARY
Set sail from Buenos Aires on your 31-night Splendor Of South America Cruise to:
Montevideo, Uruguay
Friendly and genteel, Montevideo honors colonial customs: long lunches, siestas, high tea. Nearby: Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in Uruguay (ca. 1680) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sample shore excursions: Colonia del Sacramento; A Gaucho's Life.
Pt. Stanley, Falkland Islands
Scotland under the Southern Cross: moorlands, pubs, red phone booths, sheep ranches, a "cuppa tea." Plus penguins of every type: gentoo, Magellanic, king. Sample shore excursions: Stanley Highlights; Sparrow Cove Penguin Advnture.
Punta Arenas, Chile
This remote town, pioneered by Yugoslav settlers and sheep ranchers, sits on rolling hills overlooking the Strait of Magellan. Sample shore excursions: Torres del Paine National Park; Antarctica: A Spectacular Flyover; Scenic Patagonia.
Punta Arenas, Chile
Ushuaia, Argentina
The southernmost town in the world, where dominating peaks loom on three sides; the fourth opens to the Beagle Channel, where sea lions bellow and king crab rules. Sample shore excursions: Tierra del Fuego National Park; Penguins & Beagle Channel.
Cape Horn
Magellan's fleet first circled this massive, treacherous rock at continent's end, and until the Panama Canal was constructed, this was the main shipping route from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Puerto Montt, Chile
Gateway to the scenic Lake District, a series of fragrant eucalyptus and pine forests, icy lakes, Bavarian hamlets and luminous snowcapped volcanoes. Sample shore excursions: Alerce Mountain Lodge & Lake of Reflections; Petrohué Rapids & Frutillar.
Valparaiso (Santiago), Chile
A lush, irresistible tangle of serpentine streets, steep hills and 15 ascensores - ingenious antique trams. Nearby is the seaside resort of Vina del Mar. Sample shore excursion: Highlights of Santiago.
Coquimbo (La Serena), Chile
Pisco sours, succulent seafood, fine lapis lazuli - even an original moai from Easter Island - await. Sample shore excursions: A Taste of Chile; La Serena & Coquimbo Half-day City Tour.
Callao (Lima), Peru
Your link to colonial Lima: Cuzco, where ancient Quechua is still spoken in the marketplace, and mist-veiled Machu Picchu. Sample shore excursions: Archeological Day in Lima; Shopper's Delight; Cuzco & Machu Picchu Overland Adventure.
Salaverry (Trujillo), Peru
To the north is the "Lordiest City" of Trujillo, founded in 1535 and still rich in ornate colonial detail. At its edge, far older and long abandoned by the Chimu Indians, sits the eerie adobe metropolis of Chan Chan. Sample shore excursions: Trujillo and the Temples; Ch n Ch n Citadel/Dragon Huaca/Totora Caballitos.
Manta, Ecuador
Just outside this tranquil coast town lie the villages where the famous Panama hats are woven. Farther afield: colonial Quito, so perfectly preserved the entire Old Town has been designated a World Heritage Site. Sample shore excursions: A Day in Quito; Manta & Montecristi.
Fuerte Amador, Panama
Energetic crossroads of commerce, purveyor of the tropical essential, the famed Panama hat. Don yours and sip a cold cerveza at a waterfront café as you watch ships of all origins slip under the Bridge of the Americas. Don't miss the fascinating Interoceanic Canal Museum.
San Blas Islands, Panama
Home of the Cuna Indians, a warmly hospitable people famous for their finely sewn, tropically colored molas. The day is yours to explore the thatched-hut villages and lounge on silken beaches.
Cartagena, Colombia
Once a bastion of the Spanish Main, this fortified city boasts colonial architecture, pristine offshore islands and the finest emeralds in the world. Sample shore excursions: Cartagena City Tour; Old Walled City Historical Walking Tour; Rosario Islands Cruise.
Falmouth, Jamaica
Noted for being one of the Caribbean's best-preserved Georgian towns, Falmouth boasts a rich 18th and early 19th century history. Explore Saint Peter's Anglican Church, built in 1795; shop for local crafts at the Albert George Shopping and Historical Centre, and visit Greenwood Great House; built in 1760, this house was once owned by poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning's family and today is home to the finest antique museum in the Caribbean. Sample shore excursion: Dunn's River Falls & Jamaica Bobsled.
Georgetown, Cayman Islands
Crystalline waters, snorkeling with tame stingrays, civilian submarines: This duty-free port has it all, plus Seven Mile Beach and a charming turtle farm.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, US
There is an abundance of things to see and do in the Fort Lauderdale area: visit the newly redesigned Fort Lauderdale Beach and cafes, stroll the historic Riverwalk, shop the luxurious stores on Las Olas Boulevard or venture to the Everglades for an intriguing air boat excursion.
